American Gods

The Story Behind Anubis' Involvement with the American Mafia.

The boss: a bio of the anubis you know and the anubis you don't

She goes by many names; the dog who swallowed millions, the ruler of nine bows, the God of Death. For those who chose to study their Egyptian lore rather than Greek gods and goddesses, you would know these titles belong to a death deity by the name of Anubis.

Abilities

Are we gonna bark all day, little doggy, or are we gonna bite?

Location: Sin City

It all happened in one night. A rush. A glance. A touch. And then a dance.

Not your grandfather's Anubis

The Egyptian people believed that in order to get to the afterlife, you needed to pass a test. The test consisted of Anubis weighing one's heart against a feather on a large golden scale. Should the heart weigh more than the feather, it would be fed to Ammit, a demonic creature with the head of a crocodile and the body of a lion. Or thrown into the Lake of Fire.

... you won't hear much about the Lake of Fire, though.

And so, as the Lord of the Underworld, Anubis would assume the role of ushering souls until her uncle, Osiris, took over as Lord of the Underworld. Anubis still continues to perform embalming rituals and intends to protect dead pharaohs and commoners alike.
It was believed that when Osiris' body was embalmed, and the funeral rights were ready to be performed, his brother Set intended to attack him once again- this time taking the form of a leopard. Anubis was able to stop Set, branding him in his leopard form with a hot iron rod. She then flayed his skin, wearing it as a warning against anyone who would dare to defile the bodies of the dead. Any Egyptian priest was to wear leopard skin to celebrate the victory of Anubis. This story of Anubis branding the leopard Set is the story that is used to explain how leopards got their spots. When Osiris passed over to the underworld, out of respect, Anubis stepped down from the throne.

Aside from Osiris and her wife, Bastet, Anubis has a rather strained relationship with the rest of the pantheon. Being the seed of Set, the primordial and infamous god of chaos, it was already a rough start. It was even arranged that Anubis was to be male, her life as a lord already planned ahead of her. It was destined for her to live the life of the male gods before her, so she assumed that role without question.

Instead of attending family conferences or starring in an Egyptian epic of her own, she tended to the dead. The very moment she was appointed as Lord of the Underworld (Duat), she even had the task of keeping her father's chaos from destroying reality itself. Unlike the rest of the pantheon, Anubis did not know much about the world outside of Duat. The Jackal Deity learned what she could about the outside world from the very souls she led to the Underworld, deprived of any other interaction.

This lack of human or even god interaction made Anubis a rather awkward and dry individual, compared to most gods. The jackal will often speak in riddles and make jokes at inappropriate times. Her style is rather masculine and old fashioned- her favorite being an all black suit and tie.

Battle experience, weapons of choice, and the book of the dead

Anubis was at her prime when she sat on the throne as Lord of the Underworld. Gifted with the power to rival even chaos itself, the death deity could manipulate both time and reality by the snap of a her fingers. Stepping down from the throne caused some of these abilities to disappear, however.

● As the protector of Duat and the dead, Anubis had been fighting since the moment she was created. Before earning her sword, she fought armies of demons gladiator style.

● Sword of Anubis (see: JJBA): In the form of a golden katana, this sword has a mind of its own. Should someone unsheathe the sword, it would do whatever it takes to kill. This includes mind manipulation and possession. If the sword does not wish to be wielded, nothing will be able to unsheathe it. It also has the strange ability to cut through dimensions and can manipulate where it can slice. For example: Anubis can slice the skin underneath without cutting one's clothes. As long as it exists, the blade can run past it.

● Living in America, Anubis eventually picked up the hobby of boxing and mixed martial arts. Since her strength and speed are enhanced, she often toned down her true ability in the octagon.

Teleportation. Now, as Lord of the Underworld, she used to do this on a whim (even though she was forbidden from teleporting out of Duat). But nowadays she's limited to only being able to teleport under the night sky or the shadows.

Army of the Dead. Should the occasion arise, the death Deity could start a new apocalypse on a whim. Mummies and corpses alike will rise from the ashes and will kill on command. Their numbers will surely make up for their lack of strength.

● A beast with the head of a crocodile and the body of a lion emerges from the shadows. Even at her gargantuan size, she is faster than the speed of light. This terrifying, ancient demon is called "Ammit", and will eat a trillion suns if given the opportunity. It's a blessing that Anubis is able to keep such a powerful beast on a leash, for her power exceeds even Anubis. Tasked to eat the hearts of the damned to keep her hunger satisfied. Loves her hearts seasoned with pure Capsaician.

Precognition (see: American Gods) Anubis knew the past and the future of every soul she led to the afterlife. Time itself would stop as she gently told each and every one of them how their loved ones would eventually move on after their death. For the living, the precognition is only received in bits and pieces.
